What Is the CCRN Exam?

Certification does not replace an RN or APRN license. It recognizes specialized knowledge and experience beyond basic licensure, while state boards continue to control nursing licenses and renewal rules.

CCRN Exam Requirements

AACN requires candidates to hold a current, unencumbered U.S. RN or APRN license. Nurses practicing outside the United States must hold a license or credential that is legally recognized in their country and meets AACN documentation rules.

Direct-care candidates choose one of two clinical-hour options. The two-year option requires 1,750 hours of direct care during the previous two years, including 875 hours in the most recent year. The five-year option requires 2,000 hours during the previous five years, including 144 hours in the most recent year.

Your hours must involve the patient population covered by the exam you select. A supervisor or an RN or physician colleague must be able to verify the experience, so document your dates, units, roles, and verifier before you apply.

AACN also provides Knowledge Professional and Tele-critical Care eligibility pathways. Do not assume that direct-care rules apply to those pathways; open the current AACN handbook for the credential and pathway you plan to pursue.

CCRN Exam Format

The current computer-based exam allows three hours for 150 multiple-choice items. AACN scores 125 items and uses 25 unscored items to collect data for future exams, but the test does not identify which items are unscored.

The blueprint assigns 80% of the exam to Clinical Judgment and 20% to Professional Caring and Ethical Practice. The exact clinical breakdown differs across Adult, Pediatric, and Neonatal versions, which makes the correct test plan your most important study map.

How Much Does the CCRN Exam Cost?

AACN currently lists the CCRN exam fee at $260 for AACN members and $375 for nonmembers. Membership can affect the price, but candidates should compare the full membership cost and benefits instead of assuming membership always creates the lowest total.

How to Apply for the CCRN Exam

Build a Focused CCRN Study Plan

Use a diagnostic set of original practice questions to identify gaps. Do not memorize answer patterns or use unauthorized exam dumps; they do not measure clinical reasoning and may violate test-security rules.

Study in focused blocks that connect physiology, assessment findings, interventions, and expected responses. After each block, explain the reasoning aloud or write a short clinical rationale to expose gaps that passive reading can hide.

Start with AACN’s current preparation guidance, handbook, test plan, and bibliography. AACN offers practice questions and review products, but it states that candidates do not have to buy or use a specific preparation product to qualify for the exam.

Evaluate third-party resources by publication date, blueprint alignment, author credentials, rationale quality, and correction policy. Reject any product that promises a guaranteed pass, claims to reproduce live exam items, or hides who wrote and reviewed the material.
